Considering the high risk of attacks against educational institutions, students also need to be on the lookout to protect their information online. Here are tips for university students:

  • Use HTTPS websites: ensure communication is safe, secure, and encrypted
  • Beware of scams: don’t click on suspicious emails, and links
  • Log out of systems when you are not using them: especially library or public places, log out of your apps, and never log into your online banking when connected to public wifi and systems

2. University of Windsor establishes first Canadian transportation cybersecurity centre

The University of Windsor has opened Canada’s first transportation cybersecurity centre, SHIELD Automotive Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence. It will focus on skills and new innovations for connected and autonomous vehicles. SHIELD will work with corporations, government agencies, and industry.

Dr. Mitra Mirhassani and Dr. Ikjot Saini, both University of Windsor professors who co-founded and are leading the centre are recognized as being among Canada’s top talents in the automotive cybersecurity field.

  • Dual-layered account protection: create strong passwords and eliminate the predictability of your password
  • Educating employees and customers: set up cybersecurity workshops and seminars for your staff
  • Enable private and secure connections: establish secure connections, install anti-malware, anti-viruses
  • Routine checkups: Run tests, simulations, and check the system on the regular
  • Liaisons with cloud-based networks: important for customer engagement by finding advanced ways to store and back-up data
