Employees can be insider threats for several reasons. Some might be to have access to trade secrets, dissatisfied employees who had issues with the company and could try to get back for firing them. 

These are the three main reasons:

1. Financial- The first reason why an employee can become an insider threat is for financial reasons. Sometimes employees have access to trades and data which could be sold for a lot of money by organized crime groups. Companies should be careful of these types of employees that start showing more income than they actually make. 

2. Political or professional- Second reason could be politics which is another strong reason for employees to become insider threats. An employee might be upset with their work situation but cannot see a way to fix it because of office politics. It is important to have a peaceful environment for employees at work 

3. Emotional or psychological - Employees can sometimes feel their work is not meeting certain emotional needs. Since the pandemic,  employees have been working remotely and sometimes it could be stressful which could affect them negatively. 

Companies should have strategies to defend themselves from insider threats. Insider threats usually begin when employees feel like outsiders in the company. It is important for companies to have mental-health professionals to help their employees' states of mind regularly. When employees are happy they are never insider threats.
